Report: Farmland values in Illinois have increased, here's what that means (WREX) — The value of farmland has increased in a few states in the Midwest, including Illinois.  A report released last month by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago showed agricultural land values have surged. The report surveyed 151 bankers to determine the value of agricultural land.  Farmland values surged 18% in the third quarter this year compared to last year, according to the report.  The District’s agricultural credit conditions were better in the third quarter of 2021 than a year earlier. Repayment rates for non-real-estate farm loans were higher relative to the same quarter of the previous year for the fourth consecutive quarter (accompanied by lower loan renewals and extensions). In the third quarter of this year, the availability of funds for lending by agricultural banks was again higher than a year ago, even as the demand for non-real-estate farm loans remained lower than a year earlier for the fifth consecutive quarter. Here's the percentage change in dollar value of good farmland from Oct. 1, 2020 compared to Oct. 1, 2021: Assisted by low interest rates, government support, and higher than normal farm incomes, the District saw a year-over-year gain of 18 percent in its agricultural land values in the third quarter of 2021. This was the largest year-over-year increase in the District’s farmland values in nine and a half years.  Although drought threatened a substantial portion of the Midwest over the summer, District-wide corn and soybean yields in 2021 rebounded strongly from 2020 and looked to set new highs, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data. In October, the USDA forecasted the five District states’ harvest of corn for grain in 2021 to increase by 7 percent from 2020 and be the largest since 2016. Similarly, the USDA forecasted the soybean harvest for the five District states in 2021 to rise by 11 percent from 2020 and set a record.

For one, mental illnesses change people's behaviors which can make them less likely to protect themselves from an infection, with measures like social distancing or wearing masks. Second, people with mental illness tend to have poorer overall health and many chronic health problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular problems, kidney disease. "It is this very high prevalence of comorbid medical conditions that's likely to actually be putting them at greater risk for negative outcomes [from COVID-19]," says Volkow. It's well known that people with mental illness on average live shorter lives and die of health conditions other than their psychiatric diagnosis. "They suffer prematurely from chronic illnesses, medical neglect," says Dr. Ashwin Vasan , who is president and CEO of Fountain House, a mental health nonprofit. They are also among the most isolated in society, he says, and that isolation takes an immense toll on their bodies putting them at a higher risk of chronic illnesses. "There have been study after study showing that it leads to inflammation, immunologic stress, neurodegenerative decline, immunologic impairment, endocrinological impairment," says Vasan. It's equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, he notes.
